Journalism has reached a point in the past decade when news organizations are more willing than ever to invest into online-based operations. But, Nguyen’s research begins by assuming that they don’t do this out of an insatiable desire to be innovative or to fully realize the potential of the Naija news, instead, they are afraid that the internet could replace traditional media in their news industry.

They’ve not tried to comprehend the reasons people are turning to the Internet for news and what it could do for their behavior after they’ve received it.

These studies allowed us to examine the connection between attributes of news sites and the decision of internet users to accept these attributes. However, they did not analyze the actual consequences. This is vital in the future growth of online news.

In what way are the socio-technical benefits of online news are linked to the manner internet users adopt, use, assess and connect themselves with online news?

What comes directly from this is the question of whether or not online news sources can slowly replace traditional media or if all Nigerian news sources will complement each other. If there’s a reduction in time spent with traditional news media following online news adoption, how does this relate to the socio-technical benefits of online news?

    Methods

The data used in the article comes from a nationwide survey of Australian users of news conducted in 2004, that involved internet non-users, internet users who were not using online news, and online news users.

    Findings

The speed of news was the primary reason why users of online news took to. 70% of internet news readers only visit news websites every day. 47% of people would browse the internet first if something important had happened. This means that online news providers must be able to provide continuous 24 hours of Nigerian news and information.

It is evident that the public expects constant updates, good content too – 90% of news site users clicked on hyperlinks to get in-depth and background information. This stresses the importance of taking advantage of the link-based and infinite online space, as well as its interactive quality, to gain a wider range of perspectives, from as many audiences as possible. The study also reveals that personalization (the ability to receive tailor-made news) does not contribute to how many people are using news sites, but it affects the degree of their commitment to it following their adoption.

naija news find it crucial to be able to combine news with other online purposes (email alerts, embedding news in other sections of portal websites) Also, the “no cost” option is also crucial. This study shows that people don’t want to spend money on news, and will not in the future. Multitasking is less likely when news was cost-free.

The surprising thing is that the interactive aspect that allows users to interact with media was not as significant as the professionals typically consider. The reason for this could be due to the fact that journalist user interaction was largely unnoticed at the time that the study was carried out.
